Mail Backup

All mail downloaded to the GEM server is stored on a daily basis in the mail archive. If mail is deleted and purged it will still be in the mail archive. If there is a requirement to retrieve an e-mail this can be done by making an e-mail account for a user called mailbackup.

Create a new IMAP e-mail account in your Mail Client, just as would be created for an ordinary user, but use the name mailbackup and use the password used for logging in to the server as root. The name and e-mail address for this account is irrelevant as long as something is entered, as this will not be used for sending or receiving e-mails.

Once the account is created it may be necessary to ensure the IMAP folders are showing. In Outlook Express 6, go to the Tools menu and IMAP Folders...  The 'Show/Hide IMAP Folders' window will appear. Select all the folders by clicking the top one, scrolling to the last folder, hold down the shift key and click the last one. With all the folders selected click the 'Show' button then 'OK'. All years, months and days should now be available for searching through.
